Points for Choosing Wheels

Choosing the best wheels for your beloved car. Learn about size, structure, and matching!

"I want to change my wheels to make my car look cool and stylish, but what kind of wheels should I choose?"
That's right, choosing the right wheels is a surprisingly deep subject, including not only selecting the right size for your car but also coordinating with trendy styles and colors.
Use this as a reference to choose the best-matching wheels and give your beloved car a fantastic makeover.
Please also keep the instruction manual in a place where you can easily access it whenever you need it.

Regarding the change to all-inclusive pricing

Thank you for your continued patronage of WORK.
Until now, WORK displayed its products at tax-exclusive prices, but as of March 31, 2021, we have changed to all-inclusive pricing.
This change is due to the "Act on Special Measures for the Transfer of Consumption Tax," which expired at the end of March 2021, and the "all-inclusive pricing" system becoming mandatory from April.
Please note that this change is only a change in the display method and will not affect the total amount you pay.

Part Names and Inch Sizes

Let's learn the names of each part that makes up a wheel!

Find the best size by understanding the relationship between the wheel and the tire!

■The trend is to "inch up" your wheels.

When changing wheels, there are two methods: "inch up," which is to choose a larger size than the stock wheels, and "inch keep," which is to choose the same size. Even with an inch keep, WORK wheels can be a sufficient dress-up, but the trend is to inch up. In other words, if your stock wheels are 19 inches, the current trend is to choose 20 or 21-inch wheels.

■Adhering to the outer circumference is a prerequisite.

However, when inching up, you must be careful about the outer circumference size. You must adhere to the outer circumference size of the tire when combined with the stock wheel. If the outer circumference size is off, the speedometer and odometer readings may be incorrect, and it may also affect handling stability.

■Check the tire's aspect ratio.

When you inch up the wheels while keeping the outer circumference size the same, the tire's aspect ratio will inevitably decrease. This means the tire becomes flatter. This improves handling and allows for a sportier ride. However, if you inch up the wheels too much, you may have to use extremely low-profile tires, and in some cases, there may not be a matching tire available, so be careful.

Overall Wheel Structure

Wheels are divided into three types depending on their structure.
Let's choose the best one based on their characteristics!

Structure

The rim and disc are molded as a single unit. Recently, this has also been called a monoblock structure in a European style.

Advantages

Since it is molded as a single unit, it is easy to ensure rigidity, and the manufacturing process is simple, so it offers excellent cost performance.

Structure

This structure has the rim and disc parts molded separately, and most modern 2-piece wheels are joined by welding.

Advantages

The position of the disc can be set freely, allowing for custom-made wheels with inset settings in millimeter increments.

Structure

This is a three-in-one structure where the outer rim, inner rim, and disc are combined with pierce bolts.

Advantages

The outer rim, inner rim, and disc can be made from different materials and with different manufacturing methods, resulting in excellent functionality and design. It is also considered top-of-the-line in North America and Europe.

About Rims

The recommended rim structure changes depending on the dress-up style you are aiming for!

Types of Rims

The normal rim is the basic structure of a wheel. It has a wide space on the inner side, which is advantageous for cars equipped with large-diameter disc brakes. It is especially recommended for sporty vehicles. Tires are mounted from the outer side.

The step rim is a reverse type with a distinctive step design on the outer side. It is a form that combines the features of a full reverse rim and a normal rim. It is recommended for various vehicles, including sedans and minivans. Step rims are also called semi-reverse rims. Tires are mounted from the inner side.

The full reverse rim is a reverse version of the normal rim structure. It has a structure that allows for a larger disc surface, so the outer rim is flatter than a normal rim of the same inch size, making it look like a larger diameter. It is recommended for various vehicles, including sedans and minivans. Tires are mounted from the inner side.

Understand the relationship between rim width and inset to aim for the perfect setting!

Rim Width and Inset

■What is rim width?

Rim width is the depth of the wheel. It is the size between the two rims on both sides that hold the tire, and it must be changed to match the tire's width. At WORK, you can choose the rim width in 0.5-inch increments.

■What is inset?

Inset is a numerical value that indicates the distance between the "center of the rim" and the "mounting surface to the car body (disc part)." (The unit is mm). If the mounting surface is on the outer side of the rim's center, it is a "positive (+) inset," and if it is on the inner side, it is a "negative (-) inset = outset." As the inset becomes more positive (+), the wheel moves further inward, and as it becomes more negative (-), the wheel moves further outward from the car body.

How to Adjust Rim Width and Inset

Wheel design is not the only important point for customization; coordinating the wheel size (inch/rim width/inset) with the vehicle is also important. Here, we will explain how to set up the wheels by adjusting the rim width and inset according to the vehicle and tires.

■Select the rim width that matches the tire.

First, for tires, it's common to choose wider tires than the stock ones to improve both styling and performance. The rim width of the wheel that can be mounted is determined by the width of the tire you choose, so select a matching rim width.

■Set the inset value.

Once the rim width is determined, the next point is the relationship with the caliper (brake part) on the inner side and the fender on the outer side. If the wheel has too large a positive inset, it will interfere with the inside of the fender, and conversely, if the wheel has too large a negative inset, it will touch the fender or protrude from the car body. Since it is a violation of traffic laws for the tire or rim surface to protrude from the fender, you must carefully consider the balance between the inner and outer sides and calculate the best inset value.

About Discs

From big caliper support to deep rim support. The disc shape changes depending on "what you want from your car"!

Rim Structure

■【R disk】Big Caliper Support

The R Disk has a deep space behind the disc to prevent interference with the caliper. This disc is suitable for sports-oriented users who want to equip a large brake system.

■【A disk】Standard Support

The A Disk is a standard type that is compatible with the undercarriage of most cars. It is compatible with a wide range of car models and is suitable for dress-up beginners or users who want a light dress-up.

■【O disk】Deep Rim Support

The O Disk has a shape that allows for a deeper outer rim compared to the A Disk with the same inset value. This disc is suitable for users who want a wheel design with a deep sense of depth.

The disc shape isn't just R, A, and O!

WORK's discs are based on R, A, and O, but some products also offer other disc shapes, with a total of nine types from T to W, in order of mounting height. Even if you don't have big calipers, depending on the wheel size and disc shape you choose, there is a risk of interference with the caliper. To prevent this, we display a "Limit Disk" during the "WORK Matching Search." If you choose a disc with a shallower rim than the disc shape shown as "Limit Disk," you can mount it without interfering with the caliper.

Disc Color & Rim Color

Choose from a rich variety of colors to match your style and preferences!

WORK offers a wide range of disc color variations, such as chrome plating and cut clear. The available colors vary depending on the design, so please choose from the color variations listed at the bottom of each product's specification table to match your desired dress-up style and preferences. In addition to the disc color, you can also choose the rim color depending on the design.

Base Price

Check the base price of the wheel you have chosen!

Once you have chosen a wheel that matches your desired dress-up style, all that's left is to check the price.
The price of a product with the same design varies depending on the size, rim width, and disc (& rim) color.
Be sure to choose the best-matching wheel while also considering your budget.

Other Symbols and Standards

■JAWA

In order to comply with the technical standards for light alloy disc wheels set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, three types of strength confirmation tests and a double inspection check by the Japan Vehicle Inspection Association are conducted to ensure the safety and quality of the wheels. Aluminum wheels that pass this test are affixed with a JAWA quality certification sticker as proof of quality maintenance and improvement. We also provide safety and security by conducting activities to prevent the copying of wheel designs through the design deposit system.

■JWL-T

Technical standards for light alloy disc wheels for trucks and buses. If a wheel does not have a JWL or JWL-T certification mark, it will fail the vehicle inspection. This is engraved on wheels that have a higher load capacity than wheels for passenger cars. T stands for truck. The test items for safety standards are almost the same as JWL.

■JWL

Short for JAPAN LIGHT ALLOY WHEEL. Wheels engraved with the JWL logo indicate that they meet the safety standards for light alloy disc wheels for passenger cars.
Safety standards include fatigue tests, durability tests, and impact tests, and each wheel manufacturer is responsible for conducting the tests themselves.

■TÜV

TÜV is an acronym for the German Techinischer Überwachungs-Verein, which means Technical Inspection Association. In other words, it is an international third-party certification body headquartered in Germany. It covers a wide range of fields, and as a mobility division, it provides certification services for car and car parts testing.
Most German car-related industrial products are certified by this organization, and it is considered a de facto first hurdle to appeal for safety.

■VIA

A quality inspection pass mark, which is engraved after the Japan Light Alloy Wheel Examination Council, a third-party public institution, confirms that the wheel meets the safety levels set by the JWL and JWL-T standards.

■ETRTO

Short for European Tyre and Rim Technical Organization.

Commitment Points

WORK FLOWFORMING TECHNOLOGY
WORK FLOWFORMING TECHNOLOGY

Leading with the WORK EMOTION CR kiwami, the inner rim is formed using a flowforming process where "pressure" is applied to the rim part of the cast material while it is stretched. In this process, the finer macrostructure of the aluminum is refined, increasing its flexibility. This, combined with the weight reduction from thinning the rim wall, has successfully achieved a metal flow close to that of forging. This dramatically improves the "tensile strength" and "toughness" required of the inner rim. At the same time, the outer rim is also designed to have excellent impact resistance, greatly advancing the performance of conventional cast wheels.

The pinnacle of technology!

"WORK Solid Rim"

WORK's desire for a safe and comfortable car life and a rich dress-up life has led to one answer for the ideal state of wheels supporting the footwork of cars in the new era. That is the WORK Solid Rim. Using our unique technology, we have further improved the strength and rigidity of the flange part and dramatically enhanced safety by forming a hump* that is indispensable for TÜV standard* and ETRTO standard* certification. Because it is an integrated molding with a hump that does not require cutting during molding, the WORK Solid Rim has successfully achieved a high level of coexistence between improved productivity and reliability. From this, the Dagrip Rim was born, which has a step shape at the rim end to give it a sharp look. This is a high-quality rim unique to WORK, which is the only company in the world to have put this technology into practical use.

*TÜV standard: German Technical Inspection Association. An organization that conducts surveys and certifies safety standards.
*ETRTO standard: European Tire and Rim Technical Organization standard.
*Hump: A shape that prevents the tire bead from slipping off the rim even if the air pressure inside the tire drops during a problem.

WORK's unique and diverse disc variations!

Realize the dress-up style the user desires.

Nowadays, as dress-up styles differ greatly depending on the category of vehicle, such as minivans, compact cars, and imported cars, various effects and functions are being demanded from wheels. At WORK, we quickly grasp these user needs and offer a wide variety of disc types to help users achieve their desired dress-up style.

Be careful of disc protrusion, which is common in minivans.

How you choose and combine the discs offered by WORK is up to the user. However, even if the combination is possible based on the numbers, depending on the coordination, the disc may protrude more than the rim surface and stick out from the fender. This is especially common in minivans recently. Be sure to check the notes in each wheel's specification table and always consult with a shop staff member with specialized knowledge before choosing a wheel.
