The Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) is an FIA- and FIM-sanctioned international cross-country rally (rally raid) held in Southeast Asia. First held in 1996, the event takes place every August and primarily traverses Thailand, with routes occasionally extending into Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Total distances often reach several thousand kilometers. Set in extreme natural environments such as tropical jungles, rivers, mountains, and muddy terrain, the rally tests vehicle durability, mechanical skill, and the combined abilities of drivers and navigators.
Organized by R1 Japan and supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the rally attracts significant Japanese corporate sponsorship, and an official Japanese-language website is provided. Participating vehicles are mainly Japanese-manufactured SUVs and pickups, often modified from locally produced models. AXCR is also notable for featuring Isuzu teams—rarely seen in domestic Japanese races—competing through local subsidiaries.
Originally a four-wheel rally, AXCR added a motorcycle category in 2012 in response to rider demand, and now allows motorcycles and off-road sidecars to compete. Teams racing with off-road sidecars are particularly rare internationally, making this a unique feature of the event. As one of Asia’s largest rally raids, AXCR emphasizes not only speed but also navigation, vehicle maintenance, endurance, and teamwork. This challenging rally plays a key role in connecting motorsport cultures between Japan and Southeast Asia.
