Gymkhana

ジムカーナ

Gymkhana is a motorsport held on paved surfaces where drivers compete in a time attack format, running one car at a time to record the fastest lap. Courses are set with cones and feature slaloms, S-curves, 180-degree turns, and reverse sections, requiring precise car control and handling. Each run typically lasts 45 seconds to 1.5 minutes, allowing participation with lightly modified or stock vehicles. Safety gear is minimal—usually just a helmet, gloves, and long-sleeved clothing.

Before racing, participants perform a familiarization walk to memorize the course. Drivers get two runs, and the fastest time determines their ranking. Courses combine tight low-speed turns, medium- to high-speed corners, and hard braking zones, making both driving skill and vehicle setup crucial. Gymkhana not only tests speed but also improves car control and hazard avoidance, making it a practical and educational motorsport.

Events are held at circuits, kart tracks, and large parking lots, with classes divided by engine size, drivetrain, and tire type. Cars range from production models to dedicated competition and formula vehicles. Entry to official events typically requires a JAF B-Class license, though beginner-friendly events often allow participation with a regular license. Gymkhana is popular across Japan, from the All Japan Championship to regional and introductory meets, offering a safe, affordable, and fast-paced motorsport experience.
